Classic V-neck scrub tops

The V-neck is the top most clinical teams settle on because it pulls on in seconds and works for nearly every role. We cut it unisex, women's or men's, set the pocket layout around what your staff actually carry, and sew scrub tops for your team from about 50 pieces per style.

Mock wrap and tailored-fit scrub tops

Crossed front panels and princess seams give a more tailored line, which is why mock wrap styles lead many women's collections. We can match the shaping, pocket placement and stretch level to your brand's fit block and grade it across the full size run.

Crew neck and snap-front scrub tops

A round neck gives more coverage, which suits dental, pediatric and med spa teams, while a snap or zip front lets staff take a top off without pulling it over the head after a messy procedure. Both styles take embroidery cleanly on the chest, so embroidered scrub tops look sharp whichever neckline you pick.

How do you choose a scrub top style for your team?

Choose a scrub top style by matching four details to the work: neckline, fit, pockets and sleeves. The top is the most visible part of a medical uniform, so custom scrub tops carry both your brand and your staff’s daily comfort.

Neckline

  • V-neck is the classic. It is easy to pull over the head and works for nearly every role.
  • Mock wrap crosses the front panels for a more tailored look, popular in women’s cuts.
  • Round or crew neck gives more coverage and suits dental, pediatric and med spa settings.
  • Snap or zip front lets staff remove the top without pulling it over the head, useful after a contaminated procedure.

Fit

Unisex tops are cut straight and simplify ordering for large teams. Women’s cuts add shaping through princess seams or side darts. Men’s cuts are wider through the shoulders and longer in the body. Many programs offer both a unisex and a fitted option in the same color so everyone matches; our scrub size chart explains how the cuts and sizes compare.

Pockets

Count what your staff carry: pens, penlights, trauma shears, phones, badge reels, alcohol pads. Nurses often want two lower patch pockets plus a chest or sleeve pocket. Dental and spa teams may prefer a cleaner front with a single chest pocket. Pen slots, a badge loop and a phone pocket sized for current phones are low-cost additions that staff notice.

Sleeves and vents

Short sleeves are standard. Side vents at the hem give room when bending and lifting. Longer sleeves are usually handled with a separate long-sleeve underscrub rather than a long-sleeve top, so staff can follow bare-below-the-elbow rules where their facility sets them. Those rules are facility infection-control policy, and the SHEA expert guidance on healthcare personnel attire sets out the reasoning many hospitals draw on.

Which fabric should you choose for scrub tops?

Choose scrub top fabric by how the tops will be laundered first and how they should feel second. Poly-cotton tolerates hot, frequent facility washing; polyester-rayon-spandex and polyester-spandex blends feel softer and stretch more but prefer gentler care. The table compares the four families most uniform programs choose between.

Fabric typeTypical weightStrengthsBest for
Poly-cotton (e.g. 65/35)About 150–220 GSMDurable, holds color, handles hot and industrial wash cyclesHospitals, high-turnover programs, facility-laundered uniforms
100% cottonAbout 150–200 GSMBreathable, soft, absorbs moistureLower-intensity roles, staff with sensitive skin
Polyester-rayon-spandexAbout 180–240 GSMSoft hand, four-way stretch, wrinkle resistantPremium brands, long shifts, active roles
Polyester-spandexAbout 140–200 GSMLightweight, quick drying, strong stretch recoveryAthletic-style scrubs, warm environments

Typical weights for medical scrub fabrics; we confirm the exact weight of your chosen fabric at quote stage. GSM means grams per square meter: lighter fabrics feel cooler, while heavier ones are usually more opaque and hard-wearing. For reference, one European workwear mill lists its healthcare polycottons from about 145 to 245 GSM.

Stretch blends usually need lower dryer heat than poly-cotton, so match the fabric to your laundering setup. Our scrub fabric guide covers weaves, stretch and fabric weight in more depth. We confirm the fabrics available for your order at quote stage.

How does a scrub top order work?

A scrub top order runs in five stages: brief, quote and sample, approval, production and reorder. New designs are sampled before the full run, so fit, pockets and logo placement are checked on a real garment. Existing styles can skip straight to quote. Patterns and artwork stay on file, so later runs match the first.

What determines the cost of scrub tops?

The cost of scrub tops depends mainly on five things: the fabric, the quantity per style, how complex the style is, how much decoration each top carries and whether you add custom labels and packaging. None of these has a fixed price on this page, because we quote each order on its actual fabric, artwork and quantity.

Embroidered scrub tops

Embroidered scrub tops are a durable, widely used way for healthcare employers to brand a uniform, because stitched thread survives frequent washing without cracking or peeling. A typical program puts the clinic logo on the left chest and each wearer’s name and credentials below it, such as RN (registered nurse), DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or PA-C (certified physician assistant).

Which side do you embroider scrubs on? The left chest is the standard spot for the logo, above or beside the pocket, where people look first. Names and credentials sit under the logo or on the right chest, and sleeves carry department or unit names. Keep lettering at least about a quarter inch tall so it reads at a glance, list one or two credentials rather than every qualification, and keep stitching off pocket openings, where it stiffens the fabric.

We work to a factory minimum of about 50 pieces per style rather than single-piece retail embroidery, because cutting, sewing and branding a team’s tops as one run keeps the cost per garment down. Printing makes more sense for large back designs, photographic artwork or many colors. See our custom embroidered scrubs service for placement guides, or custom logo embroidery and printing for artwork requirements across garments.

Wholesale scrub tops

Wholesale scrub tops are plain, undecorated tops sewn from consistent patterns, so a reorder matches the stock already on your shelves. Resellers, uniform shops and nursing schools buy them to brand themselves or to sell as-is. There is no published minimum for blanks; send a wholesale inquiry and we confirm quantities per style.

Our wholesale scrubs program covers blank tops, pants and sets bought factory direct. If you sell under your own name, our private label scrubs program adds your labels and packaging.

Should scrub tops be embroidered or printed?

Most clinical scrub tops are embroidered, because chest logos and name lines are small and thread lasts through frequent hot washing. Printing suits large, full-color or back designs and adds no stiffness to the fabric. Private label brands also brand the inside of the garment with woven or printed neck labels.

MethodBest forStrengthsWatch-outs
EmbroideryChest logos, names, credentialsPremium look, survives hot and frequent washingFine detail and gradients are limited; can stiffen thin stretch fabric
PrintingLarge, colorful or back designsFull color, photographic detail, no added stiffnessCan crack or fade over many hot wash cycles depending on method
Woven or printed neck labelsPrivate label brandsBrand identity inside the garmentSewn tags can itch; printed neck labels are smoother

We confirm the best printing method for your artwork and fabric at quote stage.

Tip: Keep chest logos to roughly 3 to 4 inches wide. Larger embroidery adds weight and stiffness to lightweight stretch fabric, and smaller text below about a quarter inch tall becomes hard to read in thread.

Which scrub top features does each role need?

Each clinical role needs a scrub top built around its tasks: pocket count, stretch, neckline and color. Critical care nurses carry the most tools and move constantly, surgical teams want simple facility-laundered tops, and dental and aesthetics staff favor a cleaner front. Use this table as a starting point for a multi-role program.

RoleRecommended features
ICU (intensive care unit) and ER (emergency room) nursesMultiple pockets, stretch fabric, side vents, dark or role-coded colors
Surgical teamsSimple V-neck, minimal pockets, often facility-laundered poly-cotton
Dental teams and DSOs (dental support organizations)Clean front, round or mock neck, one chest pocket, brand color
Veterinary staffDurable fabric, dark colors, pockets that close or sit low
Med spa and aestheticsFitted cut, mock wrap or zip front, premium stretch fabric
StudentsUnisex V-neck, program color, embroidered school patch or logo
Plain caribbean blue V-neck scrub top with no branding, ready for private label

How does hospital scrub color coding work?

Hospital scrub color coding assigns one color to each role, such as navy for RNs, ceil blue for techs or wine for therapists, so patients and colleagues can tell who is who at a glance. The system only works if every production run matches, so consistency between orders matters more than the exact shade.

Send us your color standards, or a physical swatch, and we will match your reorders to the approved sample. Practices without color coding often use one brand color for all clinical staff and a contrasting shade for front desk and management.

How do you wash scrub tops to make them last?

Scrub tops last longest when they are washed separately at first, turned inside out, kept away from chlorine bleach and dried on moderate heat. A top’s life depends as much on laundering as on fabric, so share these points with staff or your laundry service before the first wash.

  • Wash new colored tops separately the first few times to limit dye transfer.
  • Turn embroidered and printed tops inside out to protect the branding.
  • Avoid chlorine bleach on colored and stretch fabrics; it fades dye and weakens spandex.
  • Use moderate dryer heat for stretch blends; high heat breaks down elastic fibers over time.
  • Follow your facility’s policy for soiled scrubs, including tops worn under PPE (personal protective equipment); some facilities require on-site or contracted laundering.

Healthcare laundries follow CDC guidance on laundry and bedding in health-care facilities, which notes that hot-water washing at 160°F (71°C) for at least 25 minutes is commonly recommended, a far tougher cycle than a home machine. We supply care labels that match the fabric you choose, and private label customers can add their own care instructions.

Private label scrub tops for new brands

Private label scrub tops are usually a new scrub brand’s first product and the one customers judge it by. Plan for a narrow first range, a consistent fit, a few signature details and compliant labels before you order, and see our guide on how to start a scrub brand for the wider launch plan.

  • Start narrow. One or two top styles in two or three colors let you meet the 50-piece minimum per style without tying up cash in slow sizes.
  • Decide your fit identity. Athletic and fitted, relaxed and classic, or fashion-forward. Every later product should follow the same fit block.
  • Own the details. A signature pocket shape, a contrast pen slot, a branded zip pull or a printed neck label are how customers recognize your tops.
  • Plan your labels. Main label, size label, care and content label, and hang tag. Apparel sold in the US needs fiber content labeling under the FTC Textile Fiber Products Identification Act rules (16 CFR Part 303) and care instructions under the FTC Care Labeling Rule (16 CFR Part 423), so we confirm content once the fabric is chosen.

Tip: Order your first sample in your most common size and one size at each end of the range. A top that looks right in a medium can lose its proportions in XXS or 5XL.

What to send us for a quote

A complete scrub top quote needs the style, fabric, color, artwork and quantity per style. The more of this list you send with the first message, the faster we can price it and confirm whether a sample is needed.

  • Style: one of ours, a reference photo, or your tech pack
  • Neckline, fit (unisex, women’s, men’s) and pocket layout
  • Fabric preference, or how the tops will be laundered
  • Color, with a Pantone reference or swatch for brand or role colors
  • Logo artwork (vector file preferred), placement and size
  • Names and credentials if each top is personalized
  • Estimated size breakdown and quantity per style (about 50 pieces minimum)
  • Target delivery date

What mistakes do buyers make when ordering scrub tops?

The most common scrub top ordering mistakes are one fit for everyone, skipping the sample, choosing fabric by feel alone, ordering too few spare sizes and over-decorating. Each one is cheap to avoid at the brief stage and expensive to fix after a full run has been cut and sewn.

  1. Ordering one fit for everyone

A straight unisex cut is efficient, but staff who are uncomfortable stop wearing the uniform. Offer a fitted option in the same color.
  2. Skipping the sample

Pocket placement, neckline depth and logo size look different on a person than on a flat drawing.
  3. Picking fabric for feel alone

A soft stretch blend sent through an industrial laundry at high heat can lose shape quickly. Match fabric to laundering.
  4. Undersizing the size run

Order a small buffer of the most common sizes for new hires so reorders are not needed for one or two people.
  5. Over-decorating

Too many logos and names make a clinical uniform look busy. One logo plus one name line is usually enough.

Pair your tops

Most teams order tops with matching scrub pants in the same color and fabric, so the set looks uniform across a shift. For a full department program, from nursing scrubs to dental office uniforms, we can plan the tops, pants and outer layers together.

Ask our Los Angeles team

What is the minimum order for scrub tops?

The minimum order for scrub tops is about 50 pieces per style. One style means one design in one fabric, sizes run from XXS to 5XL, and we agree the size and color breakdown within that run at quote stage. Many clinics order matching pants at the same time, which is a separate style with its own 50-piece minimum.

Can each scrub top in a bulk order carry a different name?

Individual names and credentials can be added to a bulk order, so every wearer gets the same logo with their own name line. Send one list with each person's name, credentials and size, spelled exactly as it should be stitched. Check spelling and credential order before you approve, because the list is what we embroider from.

Which scrub top fabric works if staff wash their scrubs at home?

Staff who wash scrubs at home usually get on best with polyester-rayon-spandex or polyester-spandex blends, which dry quickly, resist wrinkles and stay soft in household machines on moderate heat. Facility or contracted laundries that run hot cycles suit poly-cotton better. Tell us how your scrubs are laundered and we will recommend options.

Can I launch my own brand of scrub tops with you?

Custom Uniform Factory produces scrub tops under your own brand through its private label program, with your neck labels, care labels and hang tags, from your design or ours. The 50-piece minimum per style keeps a first collection manageable. Start with one or two hero styles, test them with buyers, then add colors.

Do you sell scrub tops without branding?

Plain, unbranded scrub tops are available for resellers, schools and employers who embroider locally or wear them plain. There is no published minimum for blanks: send a wholesale inquiry and we confirm quantities, current fabrics and colors, and consistent patterns mean reorders match your existing stock.
