Painter clothes are the white or branded shirts, painter pants, caps and coveralls a painting crew wears on the job: loose enough to climb and kneel, tough enough to take splatter, and clean enough to walk into a client's home. What do professional painters wear on the job?

Professional painters wear painters clothing and workwear built from four pieces: a white or branded work shirt or tee, white painter pants with a ruler pocket and hammer loop, a painters cap, and coveralls for spray and sanding work. Estimators and project managers wear the same colors in a cleaner, darker version.

Why do painters wear white?

Painters wear white because most interior work uses white or off-white paint, primer, caulk and spackle, so splatter blends in rather than showing. White also tells a homeowner at a glance that a professional painter is at the door, which is why many painting contractor uniforms keep it even when the shirts carry a brand color.

When should a painting crew choose color?

A painting crew should choose color when brand recognition matters more than tradition, such as commercial painting companies with a strong logo color, or when crews mostly use dark or colored coatings. Grey, khaki and navy hide stains well and still look professional.

A common compromise keeps white pants for the trade look and puts the brand color on shirts and caps. Each color of a garment is a separate style for the minimum.

Painter shirts, pants and caps: building a crew kit

Painter shirts carry the brand, the pants carry the tools and the cap keeps splatter out of hair, so a crew kit plans all three together. Order shirts first, because they are what clients see; pants and caps follow the same color story.

Shirts

Long-sleeve button work shirts protect arms during prep and look sharp in client homes; pocket tees suit summer exterior work. A chest pocket for a pencil and a phone is the most requested detail.

Pants

Caps

A white six-panel or classic painters cap with an embroidered front logo is cheap advertising on every job.

Outer layers

Fleece, hoodies or a lined work jacket in the crew color for cold exterior work, and denim chore coats or overalls where the crew prefers them.

Lead paint jobs: what OSHA 1926.62 requires for work clothing

On lead paint removal and renovation work where lead exposure exceeds the permissible exposure limit, the OSHA construction lead standard requires the employer to supply protective work clothing, such as coveralls, at no cost to the worker. The employer must also provide change areas and handle cleaning, laundering or disposal.

The OSHA lead in construction standard, 29 CFR 1926.62, requires that protective clothing is removed only in change areas, stored separately from street clothes, carried away for cleaning in closed containers, and never worn home. For homes and child-occupied facilities built before 1978, contractors also follow the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule for lead-safe work practices.

For uniform buying, that means lead work needs its own set of coveralls, issued and laundered by the company, separate from everyday painter clothes. Disposable coveralls are common; reusable ones must go through a laundry that is told they are lead-contaminated.

Branded painter apparel: embroidery or print?

Branded painter apparel is usually embroidered on work shirts, polos, jackets and caps, and printed on tees and large back designs. Embroidery survives frequent hard washing and solvent cleanup; printing carries big, colorful graphics such as a company name and phone number across the back.

TeesScreen or transfer printSmall chest logo, large back graphic with phone number

Our custom embroidery and printing team advises on logo size per garment. Keep logos away from knees and cuffs, where paint and wear hit first.

Fabrics that clean up after latex and oil-based paint

Fabrics for painter work clothes should be tightly woven cotton or cotton-rich blends, so splatter sits on the surface and washes out while fresh. Cotton drill and twill suit pants, poplin and twill suit shirts, and jersey suits tees.

GarmentFabricTypical weight
Painter pantsCotton drill or twillAbout 230–300 GSM
Work shirtsPoly-cotton or cotton twill or poplinAbout 110–200 GSM
TeesCotton or cotton-poly jerseyAbout 150–200 GSM
CoverallsPoly-cotton or cotton twillAbout 200–300 GSM

Typical weights; the exact weight is confirmed at quote. Rinse fresh latex with water before it dries, and air out anything soaked with oil-based products or solvents before it goes near a dryer.

How many sets does each painter need?

Each painter needs at least three sets: one worn, one in the wash and one clean in the van for client walk-throughs. Crews doing daily exterior work or lead jobs need more, and spares for new hires prevent mismatched uniforms.

Count shirts and pants separately, because shirts are replaced more often for appearance while pants wear out at the knee.

How do you size painter work clothes for a mixed crew?

Size painter work clothes from a fit sample, not from guesses: collect shirt sizes, pant waist and inseam from every painter, and offer a women’s cut where the crew needs one. Pants sized from shirt sizes are the most common cause of returns.

GarmentWhat to collectFit priority on the job
Work shirts and teesAlpha size, men’s or women’s cutRoom across the back for rolling overhead; long enough to stay tucked
Painter pantsWaist and inseamRelaxed seat and thigh for kneeling and ladders; hem clear of wet paint
CoverallsChest size and heightEnough length in the body so it does not pull when crouching
CapsOne size, adjustable backBrim short enough to look up at ceilings

Women on the crew should not be left in cut-down men’s pants; our women’s work pants use a women’s block with the same pockets and colors, so the whole crew still matches.

Tip: Ask two painters, one tall and one short, to wear-test the sample for a full day on ladders. A shirt that untucks when reaching or a pant that binds at the knee shows up by lunchtime.

What determines the cost of custom painter uniforms?

The cost of custom painter uniforms depends on the garment mix, fabric, quantity per style, number of colors, decoration and any custom labels. Every order is quoted on its actual garments, fabric and artwork, so the table shows what moves the price rather than listing prices.

How does ordering painter uniforms work?

Ordering painter uniforms runs in five steps: brief, sample, size split, production and reorder. A sample shirt and pant is worn on a real job before the run is cut, so fit on ladders and logo placement are checked first.

What to send us for a quote

A complete quote for painter clothes needs crew size by role, the garments per person, colors, logo files and decoration placement, and whether any lead work needs separate coveralls. Sending them together lets the whole kit be priced and sampled in one round.

  • Crew size and roles (finish, prep, spray, drywall, estimators)
  • Garments per person: shirts or tees, pants, caps, coveralls, jackets
  • White, brand color or both, with a Pantone reference
  • Logo files (vector preferred) and placement per garment
  • Lead or RRP work that needs dedicated coveralls
  • Size estimate per garment

A painters uniform program that grows with the company keeps every crew matching. Painting companies that also run general construction crews can see the wider kit, including hi-vis, on our construction uniforms page.

Ask our Los Angeles team

What do professional painters wear?

Most professional painters wear white or light work shirts and white painter pants with a ruler pocket and hammer loop, plus a painters cap, and add coveralls for spray work and sanding. Commercial and new-construction painters also wear hi-vis layers and the safety gear the site requires. Many companies put their logo on the shirt and cap.

What is the minimum order for painter uniforms?

About 50 pieces per style, where a style is one garment in one fabric and color, with sizes mixed in the run. A crew of 12 to 15 painters with three to four shirts each usually reaches the minimum on one shirt style. Pants, caps and coveralls are separate styles, each with their own minimum.

Should painter shirts be embroidered or printed?

Embroider the left-chest logo on work shirts, polos and jackets, because thread outlasts hard washing and paint-solvent cleanup. Print large back graphics and phone numbers on tees, where a print suits the lighter fabric. Caps are usually embroidered on the front panel.

Do painters need special clothing for lead paint jobs?

Yes. Where lead exposure is above OSHA's permissible exposure limit, the employer must supply protective work clothing such as coveralls at no cost, provide change areas and launder or dispose of the clothing, so nothing goes home on workers. Disposable or dedicated reusable coveralls are usual for lead removal.
