What do nursing schools require students to wear?

Nursing schools usually require a scrub set in a program color or white, the school emblem in a fixed position, a matching jacket or white coat, closed-toe shoes and a photo ID badge. No federal rule sets nursing school uniforms; each school writes its own dress code, and clinical partner sites can add requirements on top.

Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, for example, notes in its professional attire policy that clinical agency contracts shape the dress code and that requirements may change by site. Ogeechee Technical College’s practical nursing dress code is typical of how specific a handbook gets: a set uniform color, the program patch centered on the left sleeve one inch below the shoulder seam of both top and jacket, and no outerwear other than the official coat. Requirements differ from school to school, so the program handbook is always the reference.

Typical requirementWhat it means for the order
Program color for top and pantOne fabric dyed to your color, matched between runs
School emblem on the left sleeve or chestExact placement written into the specification
Jacket or white coat for clinicalsA separate style with the same emblem
Solid colors, no printsPlain fabric only
Photo ID badgeA badge loop or chest pocket placed where it will not hide the emblem
Closed-toe shoes, minimal jewelryNot part of the garment order; set by the handbook

How do you set up a nursing school uniform program?

Set up a nursing school uniform program by fixing the dress code first, then approving one sample of each garment, choosing how students buy, and locking the specification so every cohort matches. Nursing school uniforms run for years, so a few decisions at the start save repeated reprints.

  • Decide the garments

Most programs need a scrub top, a scrub pant and a jacket or white coat. Some add a hoodie for skills labs.
  • Pick the color with your clinical partners in mind

Avoid a color a major partner hospital already uses for its own staff, so students are never mistaken for employees.
  • Fix the emblem placement in writing

“Left sleeve, centered, one inch below the shoulder seam” is a specification; “on the sleeve” is not.
  • Choose a sales model

Bookstore stock, direct-to-student or school-issued kits (compared below).
  • Approve samples

in a few sizes before the first run.

What should a nursing student dress code specify?

A nursing student dress code should specify the uniform color, the emblem position, the fit options and the layers students may wear, in words a manufacturer can follow exactly. Vague wording leads to students in mismatched shades and patches in the wrong spot, and clinical instructors end up enforcing differences the order created.

Color

Name the color and, where possible, a physical swatch or Pantone reference. “Royal blue” varies between makers; an approved swatch does not.

Emblem

State garment, side, position and size: for example, left sleeve, centered, a set distance below the shoulder seam. The emblem can be embroidered directly on each garment; ask at quote stage about sewing on patches your school already has.

Fit

Offer unisex and women’s cuts in the same color from XXS to 5XL. Cohorts vary widely in age and build, and a student who cannot find a fit ends up out of compliance.

Layers

Say which layers are allowed on the floor: the program jacket, a white coat, or a plain long-sleeve underscrub in white or the program color. Without a rule, students wear their own hoodies over the uniform.

Scrubs for nursing students: fit, fabric and budget

Scrubs for nursing students should be durable, easy to wash at home and affordable enough that students can own several sets. Students wash their own uniforms between skills labs, clinical shifts and classes, so fabric choice is about recovery from frequent home washing more than premium feel.

Fabric typeTypical weightStrengthsFit for student programs
Poly-cotton (e.g. 65/35)About 150–220 GSMDurable, holds color, usually the most budget-friendlyPrograms that put cost first
Polyester-spandexAbout 140–200 GSMLight, quick drying, stretchyStudents who wash nightly
Polyester-rayon-spandexAbout 160–220 GSMSoft, four-way stretch, wrinkle resistantPrograms that want a more premium look

Typical weights; the exact weight is confirmed at quote stage. GSM means grams per square meter. Student nurse scrubs work best with two lower pockets and a chest pen pocket on the scrub top, and a cargo pocket on the scrub pants for a pocket notebook. The scrub fabric guide compares the blends in more detail.

How many sets does each student need?

Most nursing students need at least two or three scrub sets, depending on how many clinical and lab days fall between washes. A student with two clinical days and one skills lab a week who washes once mid-week needs three sets to stay compliant.

Build that number into the order: multiply sets per student by cohort size per style, then add a small buffer of common sizes for late enrollees and replacements.

Student nurse uniforms by program type

Student nurse uniforms differ by program type: degree programs usually add a white coat, practical nursing programs often stay with scrubs and a jacket, and CNA courses keep things simple for short cohorts. The table is a guide, not a rule.

How do you order nursing student uniforms by cohort?

Nursing student uniforms are ordered by cohort by collecting every incoming student’s sizes before orientation, producing the cohort’s run against the approved specification and holding a buffer for late enrollees. The specification stays on record, so each new class repeats the same steps.

  1. 01

    Confirm the specification

garments, color, emblem file and placement.
  2. 02

    Approve samples

in your most common size and one size at each end of the range.
  3. 03

    Collect sizes

with a try-on day or a size chart in the enrollment packet, from XXS to 5XL.
  4. 04

    Produce the cohort’s run

, bundled by student if your program issues uniforms.
  5. 05

    Reorder each term

against the same specification, adding late enrollees.

Tip: Put uniform sizing into the acceptance paperwork. Sizes collected at orientation are often too late for students to have uniforms on their first clinical day.

Should students buy through the bookstore or order direct?

Students should buy through the bookstore when the school wants stock on hand and simple returns, and order through a school-issued kit when the program wants every student dressed identically on day one. Each model works at the 50-piece minimum per style; the difference is who holds the stock.

ModelHow it worksGood for

School-issued kitThe school orders per cohort and bundles by studentPrograms that include uniforms in fees

White coats for ceremonies and clinicals

White coats are the second garment most degree programs need: one for the white coat ceremony and, at some schools, for clinical or community settings. A coat ordered as part of the program carries the same emblem and placement as the scrubs, so the whole uniform reads as one school.

What determines the cost of nursing school uniforms?

The cost of nursing school uniforms depends on fabric, quantity per style, the number of garments in the kit, emblem decoration and personalization. Each program is quoted on its actual fabric, artwork and cohort size, so the table shows which choices move the cost rather than listing prices.

Nursing school uniforms at a 50-piece minimum

Nursing school uniforms are ordered at about 50 pieces per style, where a style is one garment design in one fabric and color. A cohort of 25 students with two tops each reaches 50 tops; smaller programs combine cohorts or campuses, or order one shared top style for every student.

The size and color breakdown within each style is agreed at quote stage. Current lead times depend on fabric and order size, so ask when you request a quote and plan the order back from your first clinical date. The embroidered scrubs service explains how emblems and names are placed.

What mistakes do schools make with student uniforms?

The most common student uniform mistakes are vague emblem placement, a color that clashes with a partner hospital, collecting sizes late, one cut for everyone and switching suppliers mid-program. Each one leaves students in mismatched uniforms on the clinical floor.

  1. Vague emblem placement

Students get sent home for a patch in the wrong spot that the order itself caused.
  2. A color a partner hospital already uses

    Patients mistake students for staff.
  3. Late size collection

    Students start clinicals without uniforms.
  4. One unisex cut for everyone

Fit complaints and out-of-code alterations follow.
  5. Changing suppliers mid-program

Shades drift and two cohorts no longer match.

Ask our Los Angeles team

Can students buy just one set at a time?

Production runs are ordered by the school, a bookstore or a uniform committee at about 50 pieces per style, not by individual students. Once the program's run is made, the school or bookstore sells or issues single sets to students. That keeps every cohort in the same color, cut and emblem position.

Do nursing students have to wear white?

Only if their school says so. Some programs keep white uniforms, while many now choose a program color such as ceil blue, navy, royal blue or wine. The school's handbook sets the color, and clinical partner sites may add their own rules. We produce whichever color your program specifies.

Can student names be embroidered?

Yes, if your program wants them. Send one roster with each student's name as it should appear, any title such as 'Student Nurse' and their sizes. Many programs prefer no names and rely on photo ID badges, which also avoids reprints when names change.

Can we keep the same uniform for future cohorts?

Yes. The approved pattern, fabric, color, emblem file and placement stay on record, so a cohort ordered next year matches this one. If the program changes color or emblem, plan the switch for the start of a new cohort so a class never mixes two uniforms.

Do you make uniforms for CNA training programs too?

Yes. CNA and medical assistant programs often follow the same ordering pattern as nursing schools, with a program color and a sleeve or chest emblem. Those uniforms are covered on our CNA scrubs and medical assistant uniforms page.
